The Art of Loss: a spotlight on art about grief

About Time

Centering on a young man who can travel back in time, this film highlights the importance of ordinary joys, the inevitability of loss, and choosing presence over regret. It’s heartfelt and hopeful (but skips over most messy, complex grief experiences).

None-the-less, it’s good for those who want a comfort watch or to engage in grief media with gentler, more approachable themes.

The Ephemerata, Carol Tyler

After the death of her husband of 40 years, renowned cartoonist and memoirist, Carol Tyler, intimately and honestly explores grief. It’s metaphorical (the main character often retreats to a place called Grieftown), thoughtful, and, at times, brutal. This is part one of a two part project.

You can hear Carol interviewed about her loss and art on The Silent Why podcast here.

The Grievers Library

The Grievers Library offers free and accessible resources for grieving people of all ages. They tend 8 grief-centered, little free libraries around Western Washington as well as digital databases of books about grief (both in English and Mandarin). If you’re looking to explore grief through reading but don’t know where to start, The Grievers library is a great resource.

You can visit their Sanctuary Wind Phone in Crown Hill Cemetery. First created by Japanese designer Itaru Sasaki in 2010, Wind Phones offer a place of reflection and connection, where grievers can have one-way conversations with those they’ve lost.

GRASP

Grief Recovery After Substance Passing (GRASP) was created to offer understanding, compassion, and support for those who have lost someone they love to Substance Abuse Disorder.

GRASP has recently started a support group for South Seattle. The group takes place on Zoom the third Thursday of each month. There is no cost to attend, however registration is required prior to participating in the meetings. Email MamaBearGrief@gmail.com to get started.
